Grok vs ChatGPT vs Claude for building apps
Grok, ChatGPT and Claude can all help you build websites and apps without coding experience. They're not identical, though, and the differences matter more once you move from a single page to a real app. Here's an honest comparison for beginners, based on how each one behaves in practice and what their plans include as of October 2026.
AI plans change often, sometimes monthly. Treat the prices and plan details below as a snapshot and check each provider's pricing page before you subscribe. Prices quoted are what UK buyers typically see, rounded.
The quick answer
- Just starting and want one tool: any of the three is fine. Pick the one whose interface you enjoy, because you'll be spending hours in it.
- Building a real multi-file app: what matters most is the coding agent attached to the chatbot (Codex for ChatGPT, Claude Code for Claude, Cursor for Grok), not the chatbot itself.
- Best results: many experienced vibe coders use two. One plans and reviews, the other builds. A second opinion catches a surprising number of bugs.
ChatGPT and Codex
What it is: OpenAI's chatbot, plus Codex, its coding agent. Codex can work in the cloud on a GitHub repository, in a desktop app, in your terminal or inside code editors such as VS Code.
Strengths for builders:
- Very good all-rounder: planning, writing copy, explaining errors and generating code in one place.
- Codex can take a task, work through it on its own, and hand back the changes for you to review. That's handy when you want to queue up several small jobs.
- The biggest user community, so tutorials and answers to common problems are easy to find.
Weaknesses:
- The range of models, modes and plan tiers can confuse beginners. Model names change often.
- Like every model, it can sound certain while being wrong, especially about recent changes to other services' settings.
- Usage limits on lower plans can run out in a long agent session.
Cost: a free tier with limited Codex access; ChatGPT Plus is about £20 a month and includes Codex. Higher Pro tiers cost much more and are aimed at full-time daily use.
Claude and Claude Code
What it is: Anthropic's chatbot, plus Claude Code, a coding agent that runs in your terminal, in code editors and in Claude's apps.
Strengths for builders:
- Widely regarded by developers as one of the strongest models for careful, multi-file coding work and for following detailed instructions.
- Good at explaining its reasoning and at writing clear, readable code, which helps when you come back to a project weeks later.
- "Artifacts" in the chat app let you preview simple pages and tools right in the conversation.
Weaknesses:
- Claude Code is most at home in a terminal, which feels intimidating at first (it's less scary than it looks).
- Usage limits are shared between chat and Claude Code, so heavy coding can use up your allowance for the week.
- The free plan doesn't include Claude Code.
Cost: free chat tier; Claude Pro is about £18 to £20 a month (cheaper paid annually) and includes Claude Code. Max plans start around £90 to £120 a month for heavy use.
Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor
What it is: xAI's chatbot. Since October 2026, Grok is sold as part of "The X Subscription", which bundles Grok, Grok Bot (AI teammates that carry out tasks for you), the Cursor coding editor and X Premium features in one plan.
Strengths for builders:
- Strong at up-to-date information, thanks to live web and X search. Useful for checking whether a library or service has changed.
- The bundle includes Cursor, a popular AI code editor that beginners often find friendlier than a terminal, with one shared usage allowance across Grok and Cursor.
- Grok Bot can take on longer, multi-step jobs, such as research, drafting and file work, alongside your build.
Weaknesses:
- The plan line-up is new, so tutorials and community answers may describe older SuperGrok or Cursor plans.
- Third-party models inside Cursor (for example Claude or OpenAI models) aren't covered by the included allowance and are billed separately.
- As with any model, check its code. Confident is not the same as correct.
Cost: a free tier with a starter allowance; paid plans start at around $8 a month (Plus), with Premium at about $30 a month adding Grok Bot and more usage. Prices are listed in dollars and VAT may be added.
Head-to-head for common beginner jobs
| Job | What works well |
|---|---|
| Turning an idea into a clear brief | Any of the three. Ask it to interview you first. |
| A single-page website | Any of the three in chat. Claude's artifacts and ChatGPT's canvas let you preview as you go. |
| A multi-page app with a database | A coding agent: Codex, Claude Code or Cursor. |
| Fixing a confusing error | Paste the full error into a different model from the one that wrote the code. A fresh view helps. |
| Checking current docs or pricing | Grok or ChatGPT with web search on. Then check the official page yourself. |
| Security review before going live | Ask two different models to review the same code and compare their findings. |
What matters more than the model
Beginners often spend weeks choosing a tool. In practice, the quality of your results depends far more on:
- Your brief. A clear, specific request beats a better model given a vague one. See how to write prompts for building apps.
- Working in small steps and testing after each one.
- Using proven building blocks: Clerk for logins, Stripe for payments, Resend for email, Cloudflare for hosting, GitHub to save every version. Ask the AI to use these rather than build its own.
- Saving versions, so a bad change is one click to undo.
Our honest recommendation
Start free with whichever assistant you already use, and build one small website. When you hit the limits, which you will if you're enjoying it, pay for one plan for a month. ChatGPT Plus (with Codex) and Claude Pro (with Claude Code) are both around £20 a month. The X Subscription's Premium tier bundles Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor at about $30. Then add a second, cheaper or free assistant as your reviewer.
